Dance and Music — An Improvisational Encounter

This project aims to enhance collaboration between Tyrolean contemporary dance and new music through improvisation.

Improvisation is not only a central element of artistic creation but also an indispensable tool for research in collaborative productions. While the findings and results of improvisational work are often incorporated into the final versions of the respective performances, the act of improvisation itself is rarely recognized as an independent artistic form.
This is precisely where this project comes in: It aims to establish improvisation as an independent artistic practice. To this end, improvisation sessions will be specifically cultivated in which a dancer and a musician meet in the studio, improvise, inspire and challenge each other. I call this format Space Dates.

According to the phenomenological perspective of Maurice Merleau-Ponty, the body in this project is not only seen as a means of expression, but also as an instrument of perception - an entity that both affects the world and is shaped by it. The phenomenological approach enables a deeper understanding of the interactions between movement and sound in improvisation. Through attentive listening and sensitized physical perception, the project explores different levels of perception as well as one's own freedom of choice and mutual influence in the improvisation process.

This aspect of exploring improvisation is the focus of the exchange residency at the Macura Museum in Serbia, in collaboration with kuda.org
